In Place

Two things I enjoy, writing and photography. One thing I claim to never have enough of. Time.

And yet, as we collectively prepare to begin yet another week of whatever this life has become—number three, if memory serves me—how many of us have taken advantage of these idle hours?

Of course, putting aside the fact that many are still actively working from home, caring for (and potentially teaching) children whose schooling has been interrupted, and especially those who are required to brave the great outdoors regularly to travel to, and immerse themselves in, those essential jobs that keep the world turning . . . there remains a substantial portion of time thoroughly unaccounted for, and utterly wasted.

I personally have lists of projects I’ve been putting off—yet somehow, binging the latest series, listening to hours on end of music and podcasts, and aimlessly scrolling social media news feeds seems to have taken precedence.

Hours morph into days; weeks fold into weekends, which feel oddly similar to workdays. Routines fall by the wayside, replaced by an ‘anything goes’ mentality. Brownies become acceptable breakfast fare, pajamas double as work attire, and excitement is reserved for daily walks to nowhere.

Much as I’d like to piece together a written daily diary of sorts, or compile an album of snapshots from sequester—the consistent inspiration for such projects is sorely lacking at the moment.

Channel the motivation. You’ll feel more accomplished once you begin. No time like the present, I tell myself. But first, another brownie.

Such is life in March 2020. ‘Til April.
