‘Tis February. Time for another column? While one small contribution a month may not seem like a lofty goal, it’s precisely one more per month than I attempted throughout the entirety of last year so ... progress, I suppose.
Speaking of consecutive streaks, another fun little project I decided to resurrect was the ‘one second a day’ collection of photo snippets that so many of my friends have taken up in recent years. Last year, eight days—and done. 2021, so far so good.
For someone who regularly takes photographs, this shouldn’t be a major ordeal. The problem is, they tend to come in clusters, condensed into a handful of days, or stretching over the span of a weekend.
Day to day, not so much—especially when the vast majority of them are spent at home, alone, staring at a computer monitor. Captivating as screenshots of zoom meetings are, only so many can qualify for the highlight reel.
Instead, I’ve made it my mission to find fascination in the mundane—sunlit shadows on the wall, a well-earned ice cream sundae after a long day at work, a giant stuffed puppy propped in the folds of a comforter, and of course a sprinkling of standard sunrise and sunset shots.
Because what is a year in the life comprised of, if not these simple moments, day after day ... if we learned anything from the events of the last year, it’s to appreciate the little things and take nothing—and no one—for granted.
