It’s one thing to adapt to new ‘norms’ and acclimate to the evolving times we live in. It’s quite another to truly own that reality and be even remotely okay with it.

Two things I enjoy, writing and photography. One thing I claim to never have enough of. Time.
And yet, as we collectively prepare to begin yet another week of whatever this life has become—number three, if memory serves me—how many of us have taken advantage of these idle hours?
Divided We Stand
For all the talk of social distancing, the wide range of opinions regarding the state of the nation, the planet—pick something—I am continuously struck by the societal divide into two very distinct camps: those who rise to the occasion, and those who remain blissfully ignorant of their role in the bigger picture.

Much as we might strive to improve in all facets of life, I can assure you, there is seldom a magical transformation which occurs on any single given day of the year.

Ten Years Gone
Much as I’m a lover of photographic recaps, I tend to shy away from those online trends which nudge each person to produce a photo from a decade ago, as if this alone provides some deep perspective into the life he or she has led over the course of the last 10 years.
A picture may be worth a thousand words, but there is always far more to the story.
Beauty in the Blur
They say the long view is the one which lends itself to the appropriate perspective. Something about hindsight.
Much as we (I) might hate the cliché, the fact is there’s simply no substitute for time and the objectivity it brings to situations that at one point seemed so utterly black and white.
Raw. Real. Unfiltered.
It’s not often we are driven to express our thoughts and feelings in their purest form.
By nature, we tend to take pause, analyze, assess the risk, to carefully massage our words so as not to offend. You’re far less likely to step on toes if you tiptoe, after all.
Eternity in an Hour
I’ve always been fascinated by dreams—their veiled layers of significance, certainly, but also their innate ability to remove all concept of time.
Before films like Inception made such musings and their pseudo-scientific explanations public fodder, we were simply left to contemplate on our own the fantastical notion that we could somehow be transported into another world devoid of structure... one in which anything could happen.
Unwritten
Sitting in my car waiting for the torrential downpour to subside, it seemed as good a time as any to collect my thoughts into a column of sorts.
As I approach the one-year anniversary of my making the fairly steep transition from the world of weekly newspapers to that of corporate marketing, it strikes me how very much things have changed in my life over the course of the last 12 months.
Farewell to Norty
It is with great sadness I share the news that my little Spudley, also affectionately known as Norty, passed on to the little aquarium in the sky this morning. Although he wasn’t as well known as his predecessor—only penning one “column” through the years—I felt it only fitting to put a few words together in his honor . . .
Plans & Perspectives
As I lay here on the couch on this slightly overcast Saturday, beach outing in flux, evening fireworks subject to cancellation due to passing thunderstorms, I am once again reminded that plans—as much as we continue to believe we have the complete autonomy to make them—are but a rough outline of the reality which so often befalls us.
Summer is barely underway, yet it’s already shaping up to be a season of surprises. Who’s to say what the next two months will bring? Certainly not me.
